“The Subtle Art of not giving a F*CK, A counterintuitive approach to living a good life”, by Mark Manson….this book has intriguing, somewhat new and completely opposite to usual suggestions for being content. He says, ” Don’t just sit there. Do something. The answers will follow. “… and “Action isn’t just the effect of motivation it’s also the cause of it”. Manson believes that we often try too hard and should learn to not care so much. He suggests we accept life as it is and confront the truth, as painful as it may be. The book, written by a well known blogger, contains chapter titles like, ” Happiness is a problem”, “Don’t try’, ” You are not special”, “the Importance of saying No”, and “You are wrong about everything”. Culturally, this blogger is offering guidance that is the opposite to the ultra competitive, ambitious and money driven behavior common in densely populated, capitalist countries. Canada is neither densely populated nor overly competitive. Does his advice suit our society? It’s an interesting question when you realize Canada is multicultural. How can newcomers comfortably fit into Canadian society and still practice their values around success? What is success and is success the same for everyone? Does success equal happiness? Join me in class and we’ll read the book and discuss his ideas. English conversation and Canadian culture classes are Monday to Thursday, 10:30-12 noon at the PRUDE INC. building, 165 Union Street, third floor, Saint John. All classes are for permanent residents.
